Asian Tours and Accommodation

Southern China and Hong Kong provide a vast range of possibilities for the traveler.  The four main cities in this region are Hong KongMacauGuangzhou, and Shenzhen.  All four are legitimate tourist and/or business destinations in their own right, while at the same time being as different as night and day from each other.  Actually one could easily make the point that Zhuhai (which borders Macau) being the fifth major city in the region.

Until the recent handovers to China, both Hong Kong and Macau were under the administrative control of foreign countries (United Kingdom for Hong Kong and Portugal for Macau).  Clear evidence of this can be seen in both cities, which also have a higher foreign population than the Mainland.  English is widely spoken in both cities, with Portuguese still to be seen in Macau.

While Hong Kong remains a viable financial, business, and transportation hub for the region, Macau is better known for the gambling industry, with some of the biggest investments in new luxury casinos having been made there over the past 20 years.

Guangzhou, formerly known as Canton, has a rich and long history.  This can be seen in many of the parks and historical sites.  Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province, home to the highest concentration and top production of manufactured goods in the world.

Shenzhen on the other hand is one of the newest cities in the world.  Just 25 years ago Shenzhen was a small fishing village.  Currently one of the two fastest growing cities in the world, it is the cultural melting pot of China - with people coming from around the country to live and work.  Population figures are hard to know for sure, in part due to the huge number of undocumented workers from outside Guangdong, but some estimates place it at over 14 million.  This would make Shenzhen about twice the size in terms of population from neighboring Hong Kong.
